Phinizy Swamp is a free nature preserve and bird sanctuary. It is open every day from about dawn to dusk. It contains ponds in a constructed wetland originally formed as part of the water treatment plant. Now it is home to many year around birds and a stopping place for migrants. Other animals also call it home such as alligators—stay 20 feet away! There are a number of walking trails, overlooks, and boardwalks. Classes, events, and field trips are offered for adults and children. It also includes scientists conducting studies related to water.
